Many people may not be aware that California has yet to pass the Uniform Deceptive Practices Act. As a result, the State handles deceptive practices regarding Commercial trade through the California Business and Professions Code. More specifically, § 17500 et seq. Articles 17500, 17500.5 and 17505 are applicable in prohibiting false advertisements. In accordance with Section 17500, these violations can be punishable as a misdemeanor by a maximum fine of $2500, and/or up to six months of county jail time.

Most sexually transmitted diseases have serious consequences. Partners are often exposed due to lack of protection, and with no warning. Due to the implications, it may be possible to file a legal claim for damages. When an individual knowingly infects their partner with an STD, it is against the law. If they did not disclose they had an STD, they can be held legally accountable. SBEMP handles these types of claims.

What is the California Open Meeting Act?

The California Open Meeting Act is a law that allows members of the public and others to attend and get notified about meetings involving local and state officials (with some exceptions). Under this law, local and state agencies (or other government bodies such as “commissions, school districts”), must provide public notice of their meeting along with information about the items to be discussed.
