Understanding Temporary Disability Benefits and Requirements for Eligibility

If seeking temporary disability payments, it is always a good idea to consult with a Coachella Valley disability attorney to see what your state can offer. California is a state that allows short-term benefits, but there are ways the employee could lose eligibility.

Where Short Term Programs Are Available

There are a handful of states that do offer temporary disability payments. Among these are New York, New Jersey, California, Hawaii, and Rhode Island. If the individual lives elsewhere in the country they may be able to qualify for temporary aid under other programs designed to aid the low-income earners who become temporarily displaced.

Meeting Requirements of Programs

Applicants for temporary disability payments will find that there are a number of different requirements that must be met in order to qualify. While these can be sometimes tedious, the process is much simpler than qualifying for SSD.

Among these requirements include having worked for a specific period of time. This is typically between 30 days and six months. One must also wait for one week before payments will be issued. The earner must also have earned a certain rate of pay. They can expect that disability payments will be about 60% of what they regularly earned.

Keep in mind that these benefits, if the individual qualifies for them, will not last forever. The average amount of time that the individual will receive them is about 26 weeks.
